HR Consultant for Small Businesses and Growing Organisations
King HR Advisory is an independent HR consultancy that gives founders, managing directors and chief executives access to senior, Chartered HR expertise without hiring a full-time HR director. We work with small and growing businesses and charities across the UK, from our base in Sheffield.
If you are handling people issues yourself, or leaving them to someone whose real job is something else, we can take the weight off. We are direct, we give a clear view, and we tell you when the answer is that you are doing fine.
When businesses call an HR consultant
Most of our clients come to us at one of these points:
A disciplinary, grievance or absence case has landed and nobody has run one before
A manager has told you they want to dismiss someone and you are not sure you can
The business has grown past the point where the founder can handle people matters informally
Contracts and policies are out of date, or were copied from somewhere else
The law is changing, and you want to know what it means for you
You need senior people leadership but cannot justify a full-time hire
None of these is unusual. Most of them are cheaper and quicker to fix early.
Three ways to work with us
Fractional Head of People. Senior people leadership for a set number of days each month. Strategy, reporting to the board, and oversight of everything people-related, without the cost of a full-time director.
HR and People Advisory. A monthly retainer with a named adviser you can ring or email. Day-to-day advice, letters and documents reviewed, legislation updates and regular review meetings.
Case support and strategic projects. Help with a specific problem or piece of work: a disciplinary, a grievance, an investigation, an appeal, a restructure or a set of new policies. Fixed scope, agreed up front.
Most clients start with one and add another as the relationship develops.
How it works
A conversation. A discovery call where you tell us what is going on and we tell you honestly whether and how we can help.
A clear scope. We put in writing what we will do, who will do it and what it will cost, before anything starts.
Getting on with it. You have a named adviser. Urgent queries get a response by the next working day, and if your adviser is unavailable, the other half of the team covers.
Why King HR Advisory
Jason, co-founder of King HR Advisory, is a Chartered member of the CIPD with an MSc in Human Resource Management (Distinction) and more than 15 years of senior HR experience, including international operations and regulated environments. He has also served as a charity trustee, so he understands boards and governance from both sides of the table.
We write policies for your organisation rather than issuing generic templates. We are advisers and strategists, not a systems provider, so we work with whatever HR system you already use rather than replacing it.
Where a matter needs legal representation, for example an employment tribunal, we work with trusted referral partners and can introduce you.
Questions we are often asked
Do I need an HR consultant or a full-time HR person? If you have fewer than a couple of hundred staff and no specialist people work most days, a consultant or fractional lead is often the better fit. A full-time hire makes sense when the volume of work fills the role.
Do you only work in Sheffield? No. We are based in Sheffield and work with organisations across the UK, remotely and on site by arrangement.
Can you help with a tribunal claim? We can support the process, prepare the paperwork and advise on strategy. We are HR advisers, not solicitors, so where representation is needed we introduce trusted partners.
Do you work with charities? Yes, and we understand the added considerations of trustees, funders and volunteers.
How much does it cost? Retainers are charged monthly and case work and projects are quoted up front. The best way to get a number is a short call.
